Azamara Onward

Azamara Onward is the newest ship in Azamara's four vessel fleet and the most recently converted, and one design idea explains most of it: a small 1999 hull run as a destination vehicle rather than a floating resort. Chantiers de l'Atlantique delivered it at Saint Nazaire in 1999 as R Three for Renaissance Cruises, one of eight near identical sisters drawn by the designer John McNeece. The class runs to roughly 30,277 gross tons over eleven decks, carrying between 684 and 690 guests at double occupancy. When Renaissance collapsed in 2001 the hull passed to Princess Cruises and became Pacific Princess, renamed in Sydney in December 2002 after the ship from The Love Boat. Carnival announced the sale in January 2021, Azamara took it that March, and after conversion at Damen it entered service as Azamara Onward in May 2022. The Minerva and Adonia lineage often pinned on Onward in error belongs to Azamara Pursuit, the former R Eight. Azamara itself passed from Royal Caribbean Group to Sycamore Partners in March 2021 for 201 million dollars.

What sets Onward apart from its sisters is chronology rather than architecture. It carries the same R class bones as Journey, Quest and Pursuit, and the same public rooms: Discoveries Restaurant, the Windows Cafe buffet, Prime C for steak and Aqualina for Italian, the observation lounge high aft, the Drawing Room library, the Cabaret Lounge and the Sanctum Spa. It arrived last, and it came out of a Princess interior rather than a P&O one, so its fit and finish is the freshest of the four. Azamara's model across the fleet is destination immersion: long port days, late departures and overnight calls, with the complimentary AzAmazing Evenings shoreside event as the signature inclusion. Gratuities, standard beverages, self service laundry and port shuttles sit inside the fare. Specialty restaurants, premium drinks and shore excursions do not.

The criticisms follow from the specification sheet rather than from any failure of housekeeping. This hull is more than twenty five years old, and a refit renews furnishings and public rooms without widening a corridor or enlarging a cabin drawn in 1999. Standard categories are small, storage is tight, and cabin technology reads as a generation behind. At roughly 30,000 tons the ship is light, and light ships move: an open water crossing registers here in a way it would not on a vessel three times the tonnage.

Onward suits travellers who treat the ship as transport between places, who want access to small ports the large hulls cannot enter, and who will trade cabin square footage for a crew to guest ratio near one to two. It suits far less anyone wanting production entertainment, children's programming, or room to spread out.

**What this means for choosing a cabin.** The R class layout puts cabins on decks 4 and 6 through 8, with roughly two thirds of rooms carrying a veranda and the balance split between oceanview and a small number of interiors. The rules here are positional rather than categorical. Deck 8 is the top cabin deck and sits directly beneath the pool, spa and buffet level, which is the classic early morning deck chair problem. The Cabaret Lounge sits low and forward, so cabins immediately above and below it catch performance noise until late. Deck 4 is the lowest and steadiest. Forward cabins take the most pitch in weather and aft cabins the most propeller vibration, so midship on decks 6 or 7 remains the safest booking on a hull this size.
