Carnival Sunrise

The vessel now known as Carnival Sunrise began her life as Carnival Triumph, a cruise ship constructed by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri at its yard in Monfalcone, Italy. She was floated out on October 23, 1999, and entered commercial service later that year for Carnival Cruise Line. Built as an enlarged member of Carnival's Destiny family of ships, she measured just over 101,500 gross tons when new and represented one of the larger passenger vessels of her era. For the first two decades of her operating life she carried the Triumph name and sailed a variety of warm-weather routes for Carnival, operating from United States homeports and serving destinations across the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.

The ship became the subject of intense international attention in February 2013 because of a serious mechanical casualty at sea. On February 10, 2013, a fire broke out in one of her aft engine rooms while she was cruising in the Gulf of Mexico on a voyage that had departed from Galveston, Texas. The blaze was extinguished, but it knocked out the ship's main electrical power, leaving her adrift and without reliable propulsion. With roughly 4,200 passengers and crew aboard, the loss of power disabled air conditioning, cooking facilities, and much of the plumbing, and widely circulated reports described sewage backing up into cabins and corridors. Tugboats towed the crippled ship slowly toward port, and she eventually reached Mobile, Alabama, several days later, on February 14, 2013. The episode drew heavy media coverage and prompted Carnival to invest heavily in improving engine-room fire safety and backup power across its fleet.

In 2019 the ship underwent an extensive reconstruction reported to cost around 200 million dollars, carried out at a shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, as part of Carnival's fleetwide modernization program. The refit went well beyond routine refurbishment, adding new public spaces, dining outlets, and top-deck attractions while updating cabins and interiors throughout. Following the overhaul the ship was renamed Carnival Sunrise, marking a fresh identity that helped distance her from the notoriety of the 2013 incident. She was formally christened by Kelly Arison in New York on May 23, 2019, before beginning her new career under the Sunrise name.

After the rebuild the ship retained her essential dimensions while gaining modern amenities. She measures roughly 102,000 gross tons, with a length of about 893 feet, or approximately 272 meters, a beam of around 116 feet (about 35.5 meters), and a draft near 27 feet. She is arranged over 13 passenger decks and can accommodate approximately 2,984 guests based on double occupancy, supported by a crew of about 1,100. Her propulsion is a diesel-electric arrangement, with electric motors of roughly 17.6 megawatts each driving controllable-pitch propellers, giving her a maximum speed of about 22.5 knots and a typical service speed near 20 knots. Multiple transverse thrusters assist with docking and low-speed maneuvering.

The 2019 conversion equipped the top decks with the signature outdoor features common across Carnival's refreshed fleet. These include the WaterWorks aqua park, whose slides feature a long enclosed tube and a corkscrew-style flume along with a splash zone and a large tipping bucket for younger guests. A SportSquare recreation area offers a suspended ropes course, a basketball court, mini golf, table tennis, and an outdoor pool, while an adults-only Serenity retreat provides padded loungers, daybeds, a hot tub, and its own bar for a quieter experience away from the family areas.

Dining and drinking options were substantially expanded during the rebuild. Guests can eat at the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse, the Italian-themed Cucina del Capitano with its singing servers, and Bonsai Express for sushi, along with a Chef's Table experience and Guy Fieri's Pig and Anchor barbecue smokehouse. The ship's main dining room was reimagined as the Sunrise Restaurant, and casual fare is available at the Lido Marketplace buffet. On the bar side, the Sunrise carries what was billed as one of the largest RedFrog Pubs in the fleet, complete with a stage for live music and karaoke, plus a Piano Bar and the pharmacy-themed Alchemy Bar known for its craft cocktails.

Since re-entering service, Carnival Sunrise has been based at several United States home ports. In her early Sunrise years she sailed from New York, Fort Lauderdale, and Norfolk, Virginia, before settling with Miami as a primary base. Her itineraries have centered on short and medium-length voyages to the Bahamas and the Eastern and Western Caribbean, calling at destinations such as Nassau, Carnival's private Bahamian resort areas, and other regional ports, with typical cruises running from four to six nights.

Carnival Sunrise remains in active service for Carnival Cruise Line, continuing to operate her Caribbean and Bahamas rotations. Like any large passenger vessel she has experienced occasional incidents during this period, including reports of stateroom flooding after a storm-related pipe burst in early 2024, but none compares in scale to the 2013 fire. As of 2026 she continues to sail from the US East Coast, offering an itinerary of warm-weather cruises that showcase the extensive attractions and dining venues added during her transformation from Carnival Triumph into Carnival Sunrise.
