Celebrity Horizon

Celebrity Horizon was the lead ship of the Horizon class, built by Meyer Werft at Papenburg, Germany, in 1990 for Celebrity Cruises during the era when the brand was owned by the Chandris family's Greek shipping interests. Christened by godmother Myrto Chandris, she and her sister helped launch Celebrity as a distinct premium name, blending Greek maritime tradition with the refined onboard product that would define the line. Registered ultimately at Valletta, Malta, she gave nearly fifteen years of service under the Celebrity flag.

After leaving Celebrity in 2005, Horizon began one of the more peripatetic second acts in modern cruising, passing through a long string of owners and names. She sailed as Island Star, as Pacific Dream, and as Horizon under Royal Caribbean's Spanish subsidiary Pullmantur Cruises, and later as L'Horizon for the French-market brand Croisieres de France, working the Mediterranean and European trade under a succession of flags.

That well-travelled career eventually wound down. In her final identity the ship was named Ori, the last of the many names she carried across more than three decades of service.

Celebrity Horizon's story ended at the breakers. As Ori she was towed to Aliaga, Turkey, one of the Mediterranean's principal ship-recycling centers, in August 2022 and scrapped that year. Her demolition, in the same year that her sister Zenith met the same fate at Alang, closed the life of a ship that had helped establish the Celebrity brand and then wandered the seas under half a dozen owners and names across more than three decades before reaching the end of her long and much-travelled career.
