Editorial Cruise Ship Wiki's take on Mein Schiff 1 Cruise Ship Wiki · August 2026 · 441 words

Mein Schiff 1 is the second TUI Cruises ship to carry the name. The first, a 1996 Meyer Werft vessel that began as Galaxy for Celebrity Cruises, took the name in November 2010 and now sails for Marella Cruises as Marella Explorer. This assessment concerns the 2018 ship, built by Meyer Turku in Finland, 111,500 gross tons, in service since May 2018. She carries 2,534 guests at lower berths and 2,894 at maximum, with about 1,000 crew across 16 decks. The design idea is consistent: a large modern vessel built for the German speaking market, with German as the working language.

Two features define it. The first is the fare, which published inclusion lists say covers food around the clock, more than 100 branded drinks short of premium spirits, sauna access, gym and wellness classes, entertainment and all gratuities, a broader package than most mainstream lines offer at base price. The second is the space given to wellness and sport. SPA & Meer runs to roughly 2,400 square metres with a Rasul room, Zen Garden and Finnish, herbal and salt saunas, while sport adds the enclosed Arena court, a spinning studio and a 438 metre jogging track. Dining includes Atlantik, Hanami, Richards, GOSCH Sylt, Osteria and the Anckelmannsplatz buffet, alongside a 1,000 seat theatre and the 300 seat Klanghaus.

The English language review record is thin, and most is filed against TUI Cruises as a whole rather than this hull. What recurs is consistent: entertainment that flags on sea days, service strong at cabin level but uneven above it, and upselling in the specialty restaurants that sits awkwardly against the all inclusive promise. Food draws split verdicts, with complaints of sameness between outlets.

It suits travellers wanting a large, calm, heavily equipped vessel with unusual wellness provision and a fare that removes most onboard spending decisions. It rewards families and anyone valuing pool and sauna space over nightlife. It does not suit an English speaker with no German. Announcements, entertainment, the daily programme and menus are in German, and although crew commonly speak English, non German speakers in published reviews report feeling peripheral.

**What this means for choosing a cabin.** Of 1,447 cabins, 953 are balcony rooms, and adding 94 balconied suites puts roughly seven in ten rooms on a balcony, with more than 80 percent rated ocean view. Balcony rooms sit on decks 6 to 11 at a standard 17 square metres, with ten premium rooms carrying 30 square metre balconies and twenty spa cabins near the wellness block. Inside rooms appear on decks 3, 6, 8, 9 and 11. Deck 11 sits directly beneath the deck 12 pools and wellness complex, Horizont cabins on deck 14 sit alongside the sports court and kids club, and deck 3 rooms share a level with the lobby and the Atlantik restaurant. Suites take decks 15 and 16.

The Mein Schiff 1 that entered service in 2018 is a newer and larger ship than the original vessel of that name, and its history is bound up in TUI Cruises' distinctive habit of recycling fleet names. The first Mein Schiff and Mein Schiff 2 were converted older hulls that were later sold to Marella Cruises, the British sister brand within the Royal Caribbean Group orbit, freeing their names for reuse. The 2018 Mein Schiff 1 is therefore an entirely different ship, the lead vessel of TUI Cruises' second, enlarged newbuild generation, built by Meyer Turku in Finland at a reported cost of around US$625 million.

Stretched and enlarged over the earlier quartet, she measures roughly 111,500 GT and about 315 metres in length across fifteen decks, carrying around 2,900 guests at double occupancy. The larger hull allowed an expanded all-inclusive product, with more dining venues, a bigger spa and sports complex, and refined versions of the brand's signature spaces, including the glass Diamant lounge at the stern. The design retained the light, informal character that had defined the line while adding scale and variety.

The ship was christened by German beach volleyball champions Kira Walkenhorst and Laura Ludwig, who had together won Olympic gold at Rio in 2016, serving jointly as godmothers. Registered in Valletta, Malta, she flies the Maltese flag and carries the call sign 9HA4683.

Mein Schiff 1 has operated seasonal programmes across the western Mediterranean, Northern Europe and the Caribbean, often working from Palma de Mallorca. She remains a core ship of the TUI Cruises fleet and the template for the enlarged generation that followed.

TUI Cruises' published deck plans place her 1,447 staterooms across Decks 3 through 15, alongside named public venues from the swimming pool, SPA & Beauty complex and sauna to the open-air sports arena and the pirates' island children's club, with the Atlantik restaurant and the ship's theater anchoring the lower entertainment decks. Every numbered stateroom on the line's own drawings is individually mapped and clickable on this site's interactive deck plans.
