Silver Shadow

Silver Shadow entered service in 2000 from the Mariotti yard in Genoa and sits at the small, traditional end of the Silversea fleet, below the newer Muse and Nova class ships in size and technology. Deliberate smallness is the defining idea: 194 all outside suites for 382 guests, a published space ratio of 74 that works out to roughly 28,000 gross tons, and a crew of about 300. Butler service extends to every category.

The ship's distinction is social space, not attractions. La Terrazza is the buffet by day and an Italian restaurant at night, its handmade pastas the most praised dining element; Le Champagne is the reservation restaurant, and The Grill on Deck 8 cooks alfresco beside the heated seawater pool. The Panorama Lounge hosts the Silver Shadow Quartet from 9:30 to midnight, the Athenian Lounge on Deck 6 is the multi level showroom, the Connoisseurs Club on Deck 7 a cigar lounge, and Deck 10 holds the spa, gym and quiet Observation Lounge.

The criticisms are consistent. Cruise Critic's editors rate the ship 5.0 out of 5.0, but its 296 user reviews divide sharply, 122 calling it excellent and 50 poor or terrible, with category subratings averaging 3.8. Decor is repeatedly called staid, entertainment is thin and the ship goes quiet by 10 or 11 pm, wifi is slow, and gym equipment and televisions are described as dated. Food splits opinion hardest, with reports of uneven quality and of decline since the Royal Caribbean acquisition. At fares starting near 2,624 dollars per person, comparisons to Viking and Crystal recur. Major refurbishment last came in 2011, with a lighter refresh in late 2016.

The ship suits well travelled couples, largely aged 50 to 80, who want an all suite layout, butler service, quiet evenings and port intensive routing; published accounts place it everywhere from Ha Long Bay to Skagway to Recife. It is a poor match for families, nightlife seekers and anyone expecting current technology.

**What this means for choosing a cabin.** Entry level splits between Vista Suites of 287 square feet on Deck 4, windowed and without a veranda, and Terrace Suites of the same size on Deck 5 opening onto a shared teak veranda; two accessible units sit near reception. Veranda Suites of 345 square feet run across Decks 5 to 9. Medallion Suites of 521 square feet sit forward on Deck 7, Silver and Owner's Suites of 653 to 919 square feet midship, and Royal and Grand Suites of 941 to 1,090 square feet forward on Decks 6, 7 and 8. Position matters as much as category: Deck 7 midship sits under the Deck 8 pool and Grill, Deck 9 verandas under the Deck 10 gym and jogging track, and Deck 5 shares its level with The Bar and the casino. Deck 4 is quietest and cheapest, at the cost of a fixed window.
